Dry cleaner, stain blocker, deodoriser,

to inhibit the growth of micro organisms in carpet
The Need for Bactoshield
The DRY FUSION process is the ideal mechanism to apply a permanent anti microbial and
bacteriostatic treatment to carpet fibres. The fact that the Dry Fusion process cleans every
fibre and removes food spill residues, dust, dirt, human and pet skin and hair residues
that supports bacterial growth would indicate that an anti microbial agent is not required.
But what about in between cleaning, when these residues are left in the carpet, particularly
in damp or humid climates or when you have “problem” spills?
Bacteria and fungal spores can grow out of control in this situation.
Vacuuming does not remove adhesive bacterial and fungal spores. You are left with the
potential for infection and the transfer of fungal diseases via bare foot traffic.
Whow needs Bactoshield?
Predominantly carpeted Hospitals, Nursing Homes, Nursery Schools, Sports Clubs,
Gymnasiums, Swimming Clubs are prime targets for attention to carpet hygiene. Risk
management strategies these companies have against public liability must include a
preventative measure against cross infection and fungal disease transfer. Perspiration
odours imbedded in the carpet just worsen the problem! The risk in this area is extreme -
BACTOSHIELD is the answer.
Kindergartens & Day Care Centers, Schools
With carpet being the No1 choice of surface in these establishments, a protective measure,
if available at very little extra cost to the regular carpet cleaning price would be a natural
“yes” decision. Children, being children, mean that “cuts” and “scratches”, can happen.
Even falling on the carpet can remove skin and expose the child to an infection risk. You
don’t need to take this risk!
Risk is something you don’t have when you have your carpet cleaning completed with the
DRY FUSION, BACTOSHIELD process, because we guarantee your satisfaction.
Hospitals & Aged Care
Hospitals and nursing homes are other markets that require extra elements of safety. In
Hospitals it’s the post and pre operative wards or hotel units. Post and pre-natal clinics
and wards must also come under scrutiny.
Aged care and nursing homes have infection-susceptible patients, many with incontinence
problems that can create and usually does create, large odour problems. Not only will
BACTOSHIELD clean carpet; it instantly removes the odour from bacterially active urine
and faecal deposits.
It keeps the bacteria and mildew created smells away for good.
Homes with small children
Indeed small toddlers use their mouths to “taste test” just about everything they touch.
Has their dummy or toy been in contact with the carpet? Is the carpet safe? DRY FUSION
BACTOSHIELD reduces children’s exposure to danger.
How Does it work?
A unique chemical reaction takes place once BACTOSHIELD is applied to the carpet.
When it is diluted 1 to 4 with water the solution becomes turbid. This turbidity is in fact
the active ingredient, TRICLOSAN, showing itself as submicron particles in solution.
These particles are so small that thousands could fit on the head of a pin.
As the carpet is being cleaned - the water and glycol solvents evaporate and, as the carpet
dries, these particles become an insoluble crystal and evenly disperse throughout the
fluorocarbon film that is formed on every fibre in the carpet.
These minute, hard crystal shaped particles of anti microbial act in the same way that blue
metal acts in a concrete structure. They actually reinforce the strength and wearability of
the fluorocarbon film. It lasts longer.
Because of its even dispersion, TRICLOSAN provides permanent protection and a halo of
antimicrobial activity around each fibre. This can be seen in illustration A.
This film is extremely difficult to wear away and because it is insoluble to all but the
strongest of solvents, cleaning and spotting with “Unbelievable” as a maintainer will not
remove the antimicrobial layer.
[Illustration A]
How long does treatment last?
Because dried BACTOSHIELD films repel the adhesion of soilage and stains, water or a
gentle neutral pH spotter like “UNBELIEVABLE” is all that is necessary to remove spills
as well as oily stains.
Our recommendation however, is to develop a maintenance programme maintain good
appearance as well as remove any risk. Most health care and health club programmes
must ensure that body fluids (perspiration and body fats) are removed frequently.
BACTOSHIELD is not a miracle product.

Here you see two photographs of carpet swatches laying face down on an agar nutrient
inoculated with E.coli bacteria and then incubated for 24 hours.
On the left side, the carpet has been cleaned with DRY FUSION ACTIVATOR the one on
the right with BACTOSHIELD.
See how BACTOSHIELD throws out a field of strong anti microbial activity where as the
ACTIVATOR lets the bacteria grow up to it (and we suspect) under the test swatch.
Anti Microbial Protection - The Breakthrough
Previously, the only long-term treatment available for carpets was when the anti microbial
was added to the carpet fibres during manufacture. Our unique process is the only after
market product giving a permanent finish.
The protective fluorocarbon film further enhances the technology. It ensures that even
when subjected to heavy equipment being dragged over the carpet, multiple cleaning’s
and heavy traffic, the antimicrobial treatment remains.
Today, there is no other product we know of that can provide both hygienic cleaning and
the same anti microbial effectiveness. It’s brilliant!
TRICLOSAN IS PROVEN
The active ingredient used in BACTOSHIELD has been a proven antimicrobial in medical
products and household products for years; so safe it is even used in toothpaste. Test data
on its activity against moulds, fungi as well as contagious diseases like Staph Aureus, E
Coli; Tinea can be supplied on request.
Indoor Air Quality & Environmental Safety
BACTOSHIELD’S antimicrobial finish contains no arsenic, no ISO thiazolin formaldehyde,
no tin or heavy metals like copper or zinc. Bactoshield’s active ingredients have been
formulated to provide a halo of protection for both small and large volume spills.
BACTOSHIELD’S “TRICLOSAN” ingredient is permanently bonded onto the fibres and is
non-toxic, odour free and completely harmless. When the treatment dries it cannot omit
V.O.C.’s or toxins into the environment.
No Odours, Less Dust
Once you’ve cleaned the carpet with BACTOSHIELD, carpet based odours, mustiness,
even pet smells will amazingly disappear. Its naturally derived deodorant action is based
on clean citrus peel and fine notes. This action is reinforced by the residual TRICLOSAN.
Being non-toxic and bonded to the fibre there is no risk of allergies or allergic reactions.
Because fungus and microbes can’t grow on the fibres your customers will have few
reactions from fungus related allergies. Because more dust is removed by vacuuming,
dust related hay fever and allergy’s are far less likely to occur.
Summary of Advantages
- Carpets cleaned and antimicrobially treated at the same time
- Dries in less than half an hour
- Kills odours in carpets as well as giving residual freedom from odours
- Does not support the growth of fungus and transmittable by foot diseases
- Strong activity against gram positive and gram negative bacteria that contacts the
surface plus mould and mildew spores
- Leaves the carpet fresh with a fresh citrus smelling soft feel
Limitations & Retreatment
BACTOSHIELD cannot protect the carpet against flood damage, as it is not treating the
backing of the carpet. It is a treatment developed for the carpet fibres not the backing. Re-
cleaning with BACTOSHIELD every two years restores the carpets appearance, lustre and
deodorant activity.
Is Bactoshield safe?
Most antimicrobial compounds used in household and commercial applications are
unsuitable for carpet applications. Quaternary ammonium compounds used in some
carpet mildew treatments create a sticky, soil retentive layer that badly resoils. Other
branded carpet antimicrobial products use extremely toxic Isothiazilone (methyl
isothiazilone) and even carcinogenic organotin compounds.
The TRICLOSAN active, however, is non toxic and is used in toothpaste, acne treatments
and surgical hand scrubs.
BACTOSHIELD is therefore the safest antimicrobial in use within the carpet industry,
worldwide.
Cleaning performance
Because of the very nature of the soils found in healthcare establishments cleaning
performance has been increased over that of regular ACTIVATOR yet the pH of 7 still
remains to ensure ultimate safety with every carpet and nylon fibre.
With the added cleaning performance BACTOSHIELD maybe used to remove yellowing
traffic lanes caused by oily soil adhesion to olefin fibres and nylon, as well as residual
bound in sticky soil left by carpet extraction detergents.
You’ll think it’s remarkable.
